Bioretention Cell |
City of Pepper Pike Bioretetion Project, Chagrin Boulevard and Fox Hollow Drive
Project Goal
Showcase bioretention along Fox Hollow Drive, a residential street, and Chagrin Boulevard, a public area street, as an option to the standard open ditch or culvert system.
Design Considerations
The bioretention cells had to be design around current utilities, sewer and water lines. This limited the depth of the cells to approximately 3 feet.
Bioretention Detail
The bioretention area consists of a depression that allows shallow ponding of runoff and gradual percolation through a soil media, after which it either infiltrates through undisturbed soils or enters the storm sewer system through an underdrain system. The soil mix is composed of 70% sand and 30% peat or leaf compost, and allows for rapid infiltration of water runoff and acts as a filter system to remove pollutants. During a larger storm events surface runoff may pond up to 6” around a catch basin. Once the water in these areas reaches 6” it overflows directly to the storm sewer to prevent flooding.
The City of Pepper Pike will maintain the stormwater system and bioretention cell. Each property owner was approached by the Mayor and agreed to maintain the landscaping after 2 years.
